Talks & Workshops 2008We will be holding a series of talks & workshops at the nursery this year in an effort to inspire & inform our customers. The talks will cost £5 each, unless otherwise stated, and will be held on Saturday afternoons at 2p.m. Numbers are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Choose from the following; SUCCESSFUL SEED SOWING 15th March A practical session where we discuss collecting and storing your own seed, have a go at sowing different seed and look at what to do with the resulting seedlings to get the best overall results. Everyone gets to have a go and take their experiments home afterwards. Cost £12 SHADY CHARACTERS 19th April Everyone has a shady corner somewhere in their garden. In this lecture we shed some light (groan!) on some star plants for creating interest in difficult, often dry, shady conditions WHAT THE BOOKS NEVER EXPLAIN 10th May Text books are great at telling us whether a particular plant likes sun or shade, what height it grows and how to propagate it. What they don't say & what our customers really want, and need, to know is how and when to cut it down, dead head it, stake it, lift & divide it, etc, etc, etc! GOOD IN BED 14th June In this session we look at plants that naturally really earn their keep in the garden with an extra long season of interest, plus tips on how to keep plants flowering for a long time. USING COLOUR IN THE GARDEN 12th July Colour has the power to soothe or refresh, stimulate or even shock our senses. Colour creates mood in the garden. We take a look at colour themes, contrasts and harmonies and how to apply them to our borders successfully. HIGH & DRY 16th August In view of climate change & hose pipe bans, we take a look at those plants that, not only look good, but have very obligingly spent millennia adapting to dry climates, making them drought tolerant. We will also discuss measures for conserving water in the garden. AUTUMN COLOUR-EXTENDING THE SEASON 13th September There is no excuse for having a garden that is lacking interest as summer wanes. Autumn herbaceous borders can & should be just as colourful and interesting as they are in the summer. We take a look at late flowering perennials and also grasses, which come into their own at this time of year, and how to combine them with dramatic effect. ATTRACTING WILD LIFE TO THE GARDEN 11th October What we choose to plant and how we manage our garden can greatly influence the diversity of wildlife we attract to them. Today we discuss what we can do and plant to create a garden bursting with beneficial insects, butterflies and birds MAKE YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS WREATH 6th December A hands on session where everyone gets to make their own wreath. All materials supplied, along with mince pies and hot chocolate to keep us warm. You get to take your handy work home at the end. Numbers VERY limited.
