For March, my top 5 includes;

  • Viola corsica. This plant is one of the best all year round; it only stops producing flowers in the bitterest of cold weather. It likes sun or light shade and will flower non-stop all summer if you deadhead. Cut back hard if plants become straggley.
  • Fritillaria imperalis produces upright stems topped in clusters of large nodding orange flowers. It is a spring flowering bulb and enjoys a sunny position on well drained soil. Dies back below ground in early summer.
  • Lathyrus vernus is a short bushy sweet pea relative, that likes a spot in light shade on retentive soil. It clumps up over time and produces masses of pea like flowers in early spring in shades of white, pink and purple
  • Bergenia cordifolia 'Winterglut' has foliage that turns from summer green to deep burgundy red in the winter months as temperatures fall. In early spring sprays of red-pink flowers herald the lenghtening of the days. Excellent ground cover in sun or shade but best winter leaf colour if baked by sun
  • Erysimum 'Constant Cheer'. This is a perennial form of wallflower which forms low dense mounds of dark green leaves smothered in orange-purple flowers from Mar-Jun and again late summer. A real good doer for the front of a sunny border

Frittilaria imperalis

80cm tall upright stems are topped by clusters of large‚ nodding orange flowers in March-April. This spring flowering bulb enjoys a sunny position on well drained soil. Plant at least 30cm deep

Lathyrus vernus

A low growing‚ bushy perennial member of the sweet pea family which flowers Mar-Apr and enjoys a position in semi shade. Available in shades of white‚ pink and purple and deserves to be more widely grown
